Downtown Los Olivos has become one of California's most celebrated wine tasting destinations. More than 30 tasting rooms are concentrated within a few walkable blocks, representing wineries from across the Santa Ynez Valley's diverse wine-growing regions. Yet beyond the tasting rooms, what makes Los Olivos so distinctive is the way it has evolved while remaining unmistakably itself. Historic buildings, acclaimed restaurants, boutique shops, and tasting rooms create a vibrant downtown, yet the town continues to preserve the character, charm, and sense of place that have long defined the Santa Ynez Valley.
A Town with History
Los Olivos was named after a nearby ranch planted with approximately 5,000 olive trees in the late nineteenth century- an unusual sight in the Santa Ynez Valley at the time and one that would eventually lend its name to the growing community.
Like many towns throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Olivos began as a stagecoach stop along the route connecting San Francisco and San Diego during the 1860s. One of the town's most recognizable landmarks remains the World War I memorial flagpole at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue, which has stood at the center of community life for generations.
Another enduring landmark is Mattei's Tavern, originally built in 1887 to serve travelers passing through the valley. Today, the beautifully restored property continues that legacy of hospitality while connecting visitors to the town's early history.
Our Sotheby's International Realty office is also connected to the story of Los Olivos itself. The building, originally constructed in 1885 by Alden Boyd, is believed to be the oldest surviving wooden structure in the Santa Ynez Valley. Built of redwood and originally located along Alamo Pintado Road in nearby Ballard, the home stood among the olive trees planted by Boyd that would eventually inspire the name "Los Olivos." In 1991, the structure was carefully relocated to its current location in downtown Los Olivos and meticulously restored, preserving original details and hardware wherever possible.
The Tasting Room Capital
As the Santa Ynez Valley's wine industry grew over the past several decades, Los Olivos naturally emerged as the region's walkable tasting room destination. Today, wineries from across the valley's distinct growing regions maintain tasting rooms here, creating one of California's most concentrated and accessible wine tasting experiences.
The town also lends its name to the Los Olivos District AVA, one of the Santa Ynez Valley's officially recognized wine-growing regions. Combined with neighboring appellations including Ballard Canyon, Sta. Rita Hills, and Happy Canyon, Los Olivos sits at the center of one of California's most diverse wine landscape

Beyond Town: The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail
For visitors looking to venture beyond downtown, Foxen Canyon Road offers one of California's most scenic wine routes. Winding through vineyards, ranchland, and oak-studded hills, the corridor is home to many of the Santa Ynez Valley's most recognized estate wineries.
Foxen Canyon Wine Trail:
More Than Tasting Rooms
What makes the town especially unique is the way it has evolved without losing its sense of place. Tasting rooms, acclaimed restaurants, locally owned boutiques, historic buildings, vineyards, and equestrian properties exist side by side, creating an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and unmistakably authentic.
For residents, world-class wine, exceptional dining, and boutique shopping are simply part of everyday life, creating a lifestyle that is both relaxed and remarkably refined.
Dining in Los Olivos
Los Olivos has also become one of the Santa Ynez Valley's premier culinary destinations, offering everything from casual lunches and wood-fired pizza to more formal fine dining experiences. Whether enjoying a leisurely afternoon or gathering for an elevated evening meal, the town offers an impressive range of culinary options.
Longtime local favorite Los Olivos Café continues to be a beloved part of the community, with something new coming soon to complement the Café guests have enjoyed for years. Nearby, Bar Le Côte has earned recognition for its seafood-focused menu, while Nella Kitchen & Bar offers seasonal California cuisine in an elegant setting. For a more casual stop, the newly opened Lucky Penny brings wood-fired pizzas and a relaxed atmosphere to downtown Los Olivos.
Whether you're visiting for an afternoon tasting, a long weekend, or considering making the Santa Ynez Valley home, Los Olivos offers a unique combination of connection, character, and timeless sense of place that continues to make Los Olivos one of the most sought-after communities in the Santa Ynez Valley.
